The Lower School (6 years to 14 years)

“The heart of the Waldorf method is that education is an art. It must speak to the child’s experience. To educate the whole child, his heart and his will must be reached, as well as the mind”

-Rudolf Steiner

Children move to the second phase of childhood at the age of six or seven. This change is marked by a new readiness for formal learning. It is important to nurture the new intellectual abilities and the artist in the child while continuing to foster the life of imagination as the child moves through the elementary school.

The teacher’s task is to bring to the children in an imaginative and artistic manner all the subjects – mathematics, science, social studies, wood work, knitting, games, languages, etc., The teacher addresses the children’s feelings as well as their intellect – in pictures and stories, in colour, rhythm and music. Thus what is learned becomes a living part of the child.

The teachers at Inodai endeavour to achieve this for the children here.
